Strategy

Amul never tried to go viral.

It tried to stay relevant.

Virality lasts a weekend.

Relevance lasts generations.

That’s why children who grew up in the ‘80s...

Parents today...

And Gen Z scrolling Instagram...

All understand an Amul topical.

Very few campaigns survive three generations.

Amul Happened

Amul quietly became India’s unofficial newspaper.

Not because it reported news.

Because it interpreted it.

That’s a massive distinction.

Journalists tell you what happened.

Artists tell you what it means.

Amul did both.

The Lesson

Most brands ask,

“What should we post today?”

Amul asked,

“What deserves to become part of culture?”

Those are topical.

Imagine an archive explaining why each piece worked.

It would become the greatest advertising classroom in India.

Final Cut

Most brands chase attention.

Amul earned anticipation.

There’s a difference.

Attention is bought.

Anticipation is built.

And that’s why, after six decades, a small girl in a don’t think that’s true.

Emotion is the execution.

The real product is a belief.

Getting dirty isn’t a mistake.

It’s evidence.

Evidence that a child played.

Helped someone.

Fell down.

Got back up.

Learned.

Lived.

The stain stopped being the enemy.

It became the proof.

That single shift transformed an entire category.

The Genius Wasn’t The Campaign.

It Was The Discipline.

“Daag Acche Hain” has survived for years.

Different children.

Different stories.

Different festivals.

Different directors.

Different scripts.

One belief.

That’s incredibly difficult.

Most brands change campaigns every year.

Great brands repeat the same belief until culture repeats it back.

Consistency is underrated because it isn’t exciting.

But consistency compounds.

Here’s What Most Marketers Copied...

Emotion.

Kids.

Slow-motion cinematography.

Piano music.

Heartwarming endings.

Here’s what they didn’t copy.

Patience.

Surf Excel didn’t become iconic because of one beautiful film.

It became iconic because it refused to abandon its positioning every twelve months.

That’s not creativity.

That’s strategic discipline.

The Industry Learned The Wrong Lesson

After “Daag Acche Hain,” something strange happened.

Every category wanted an emotional film.

Banks made films about hope.

Insurance brands made films about family.

Cooking oil brands made films about dreams.

Toothpaste started talking about confidence.

Suddenly, every advertisement looked like it belonged at a film festival.

The emotional language spread.

The strategic thinking didn’t.

Emotion without positioning becomes decoration.

Surf Excel never confused the two.

The Film Isn’t Selling Detergent

It’s reducing guilt.

Every parent knows the moment.

A child comes home covered in mud.

The instinct is immediate.

“Look at your clothes!”

Surf Excel quietly rewrote that reaction.

“What happened?”

That’s a far more powerful place to occupy.

Not the laundry room.

The parent’s mind.

The Lesson For Every Founder

Don’t chase a campaign.

Build a belief.

Campaigns have launch dates.

Beliefs have shelf lives measured in decades.

Products can be copied.

Pricing can be matched.

Technology can be reverse-engineered.

A belief, repeated consistently enough, becomes part of culture.

That’s infinitely harder to compete with.

Final Cut

The biggest misconception about Surf Excel is that it taught India to accept stains.

It didn’t.

It taught us that some stains are worth creating.

And once a brand owns an idea that simple...

It no longer competes on features.

It competes on meaning.

<p class="button-wrapper" forgotten.

Emotion tends to stay.

I’ve sat in edit rooms where perfectly good films slowly became average.

Not because the editor was bad.

Not because the cinematographer failed.

Not because the script was weak.

Because every stakeholder wanted one more thing added.

One more message.

One more feature.

One more achievement.

One more line.

Death by addition.

A thousand tiny decisions.

Each completely reasonable.

Together, completely destructive.

The irony is that brands spend months discussing cameras, equipment, locations, and production quality.

Almost nobody spends enough time discussing the one thing that matters most.

The idea.

Because audiences forgive imperfect visuals.

They don’t forgive boredom.

The films people remember aren’t always the most expensive.

They’re the most honest.

They’re the ones that understand something true about people.

The ones that make you feel seen.

The ones that say something a prompt.

The New Scarcity

For years, businesses competed for scale.

More reach.

More impressions.

More content.

More output.

Now everyone has access to the same tools.

The playing field is flattening.

When everyone can produce, production stops being the advantage.

What becomes scarce is original thinking.

A unique point of view.

A lived experience.

A genuine belief.

The ability to notice something others miss.

That’s becoming the new premium.

Why Most Brands Will Get Louder

And why the best brands will get clearer.

The predictable response to AI is more content.

More posts.

More videos.

More campaigns.

More noise.

But consumers aren’t asking for more content.

They’re asking for more relevance.

The brands that stand out won’t necessarily publish more.

They’ll communicate better.

They’ll know who they are.

What they stand for.

And why people should care.

Clarity will outperform volume.

Every single time.

The Return Of Taste

Taste is difficult to define.

But you know it when you see it.

It’s why one advertisement feels forgettable while another stays in your mind for years.

It’s why two people can use the same AI tool and produce completely different outcomes.

The tool isn’t the differentiator.

The person is.

Technology can generate options.

Taste decides which option deserves to exist.

That’s still a human responsibility.

And it’s becoming more valuable by the day.

The Future Isn’t Human Vs AI

That’s the wrong debate.

The future belongs to humans who know how to work with AI.

The creators who use technology to remove friction.

The strategists who use it to think faster.

The brands that use it to communicate better.

But underneath all of that, the same truth remains.

People don’t connect with algorithms.

They connect with meaning.

They connect with stories.

They connect with beliefs.

They connect with other people.

Always have.

Always will.

The Human Premium

In a world where content becomes cheap, humanity becomes expensive.

Not because humans are more efficient.

Because humans are more memorable.

The next decade won’t reward the brands that create the most.

It will reward the brands that make people feel the most.

And that’s not a technology problem.

It’s a human one.

The tools will keep evolving.

The platforms will keep changing.

The algorithms will keep shifting.

But understanding people?

That’s a skill that never goes out of date.

And increasingly, it may become the most valuable one of all.

<div could be replaced by software in the first place?

Because AI isn’t killing creative agencies.

It’s exposing them.

And honestly, it was only a matter of time.

For years, large parts of the creative industry built businesses around execution.

Need a social media calendar?

Need a blog?

Need a video edit?

Need a campaign the product.

Ten videos.

Twenty posts.

Four reels.

A campaign.

A website.

A deck.

A hundred pieces of content.

But nobody wakes up wanting content.

Businesses want outcomes.

More trust.

More customers.

More awareness.

More revenue.

More relevance.

Content is simply one of the tools.

Yet somewhere along the way, the industry started selling the hammer instead of the house.

And AI just walked into the room holding a much cheaper hammer.

Naturally, panic followed.

The Agencies That Should Be Worried

If your agency’s pitch sounds like:

“We make videos.”

“We do social media.”

“We create content.”

“We manage marketing.”

You have a problem.

Because software can now do a surprising amount of that work.

Faster.

Cheaper.

Sometimes even better.

Clients know it.

Founders know it.

Investors know it.

The market knows it.

The uncomfortable truth is that many agencies aren’t being replaced by AI.

They’re being replaced by their own lack of differentiation.

AI is simply speeding up the process.

The Agencies That Will Win

The future belongs to agencies that become thinking partners instead of production vendors.

The ones that ask:

What is the business problem?

What does the customer actually care about?

What makes this company different?

Why should anyone pay attention?

What story deserves to be told?

Because strategy still matters.

Taste still matters.

Judgement still matters.

Context still matters.

Human psychology still matters.

A founder doesn’t hire an agency because they need a camera.

They hire an agency because they need clarity.

The camera is just the tool.

What We’ve Learned

Working in storytelling has taught us one thing.

The best campaigns never start with a shot list.

They start with a conversation.

A conversation about ambition.

Fear.

Growth.

Identity.

Vision.

Most people think advertising is about selling products.

The best advertising is actually about understanding people.

And that’s why we’re not particularly worried about AI.

Excited?

Absolutely.

Curious?

Definitely.

Using it every day?

Without question.

But afraid?

Not really.

Because every major technological shift follows the same pattern.

The tools become accessible.

Execution becomes cheaper.

Distribution becomes easier.

And suddenly the only thing left that matters is the quality of thinking.

That’s where the real competition begins.

The New Creative Advantage

In the coming years, anyone will be able to generate content.

The winners won’t be the people who can make more.

The winners will be the people who understand more.

More about customers.

More about culture.

More about behaviour.

More about stories.

More about what makes people care.

AI can generate a thousand advertisements.

It still can’t tell you which one deserves to exist.

That’s still a human job.

For now.

And perhaps that’s what AI is really doing.

Not replacing creativity.

Just forcing us to finally define it properly.

<div class="captioned-button-wrap" marketing.

Brands assumed that if a campaign worked in Mumbai, it would work in Mysuru.
If it worked in Delhi, it would work in Kochi.
If it connected in Lucknow, it would connect in Hyderabad.

Sometimes it did.

Most times, it merely reached people without truly resonating with them.

Reach and relevance are not the same thing.

A consumer may understand your language.

That doesn’t mean they see themselves in your story.

That’s where regional advertising has quietly begun winning.

Regional Is No Longer a Translation Exercise

One of the biggest mistakes brands make is confusing translation with localization.

Translation changes words.

Localization changes meaning.

A Kannada-speaking family in Bengaluru doesn’t necessarily react to the same emotional triggers as a Tamil-speaking family in Coimbatore.

A Telugu audience may celebrate ambition differently from a Malayalam audience that values realism and authenticity.

The language may be regional.

The insight is cultural.

And culture is where the battle is won.

Kannada: The Rise of Quiet Confidence

Kannada audiences have undergone a visible cultural shift over the last decade.

The success of Kannada cinema has created a stronger sense of regional pride.

Consumers increasingly appreciate brands that acknowledge local identity without turning it into caricature.

The days of inserting a few Kannada words and calling it localization are over.

People can tell when a brand genuinely understands Karnataka and when it is simply checking a box.

The difference shows immediately.

Tamil Nadu: Culture First, Brand Second

Tamil audiences often have one of the strongest cultural identities in the country.

Stories rooted in family, legacy, community, and regional pride tend to resonate deeply.

Brands entering Tamil Nadu quickly discover that consumers reward authenticity and punish superficiality.

You cannot parachute into the market with a translated script and expect emotional connection.

The audience is simply too culturally aware.

Telugu States: Aspirational Storytelling Works

Telugu audiences have historically embraced ambition.

Growth.
Success.
Achievement.
Progress.

Advertising that captures aspiration often performs strongly because it aligns with how many consumers see themselves and their future.

The storytelling is often bigger.
The emotions are larger.
The optimism is visible.

Brands that understand this don’t just communicate features.

They communicate possibility.

Kerala: Authenticity Wins Every Time

Malayalam audiences are among the toughest consumers to fool.

Over-produced advertising often struggles when compared to storytelling that feels honest and grounded.

Consumers value realism.

Characters need to feel believable.
Conversations need to feel natural.

When brands attempt to manufacture emotion, audiences notice.

And when audiences notice, they disconnect.

The Coconut Oil Lesson

Recently, while researching consumer behavior for a coconut oil activation campaign, we came across a fascinating reality.

In several regions across South India, consumers don’t view coconut oil the same way national marketers do.

For many households, coconut oil isn’t merely a packaged FMCG product.

It’s personal.

Families cultivate coconuts.
Local mills extract oil.
Communities have trusted sources that have existed for generations.

The competition isn’t another national brand.

The competition is trust built over decades.

No national campaign can solve that unless it first understands it.

This is where regional insight becomes more valuable than media spend.

Why Regional Campaigns Are Winning

Regional campaigns succeed because they answer a simple question:

“Does this story feel like us?”

Not:

“Can we understand this?”

But:

“Do we recognize ourselves in it?”

The difference is massive.

Consumers increasingly reward brands that reflect their realities instead of imposing generic narratives.

They want familiar streets.
Familiar emotions.
Familiar humor.
Familiar struggles.

The more local a story feels, the more universal its impact often becomes.

The Future Belongs to Cultural Precision

The next generation of successful Indian advertising will not be built around language adaptation.

It will be built around cultural precision.

Brands will need to move beyond:

One script.
Multiple dubs.

And move toward:

Multiple insights.
Multiple stories.
One brand truth.

The companies that embrace this shift will build stronger emotional connections.

The companies that don’t will continue wondering why their national campaigns generate impressions but fail to generate affection.

Because India was never one audience.

We were simply pretending it was.
<p class="button-wrapper" Every project becomes a chain of commitments that begins long before a client sees the final output.

And every one of those commitments costs money.

Which is why delayed payments are not just an inconvenience.

They are one of the most damaging realities in the creative industry.

The Unofficial Banking System Nobody Talks About

Over the years, I’ve noticed a strange pattern.

Many agencies and production houses end up functioning as unofficial banks for their clients.

Work begins immediately.

Pre-production starts.

Teams are assigned.

Vendors are booked.

Shoot dates are blocked.

Deliverables are completed.

Campaigns are launched.

The client receives the benefit of the work almost instantly.

Yet the payment often follows weeks or months later.

Sometimes after repeated reminders.

Sometimes after endless follow-ups.

Sometimes after complete silence.

The irony is difficult to ignore.

The smallest businesses in the chain are often expected to carry the largest financial burden.

What Delayed Payments Actually Affect

When people hear “payment delay,” they often assume the problem is limited to cash flow.

It isn’t.

The impact spreads much further.

A delayed payment affects employee salaries.

It affects freelancer confidence.

It affects vendor relationships.

It affects a company’s ability to take on new opportunities.

It affects the founder’s decision-making.

It affects mental health.

Most importantly, it creates uncertainty in places where certainty is essential.

A client delaying a payment by a few months may view it as a minor administrative issue.

For a growing business, it can alter an entire quarter.

The Emotional Cost Nobody Calculates

One of the least discussed aspects of delayed payments is the emotional cost attached to them.

Creative founders spend years building relationships.

We are taught to be professional.

Patient.

Flexible.

Accommodating.

Solution-oriented.

But there comes a point where repeated follow-ups stop feeling professional and start feeling degrading.

No founder starts a business because they dream of sending reminder emails every week.

No entrepreneur wants to spend valuable time chasing money that was contractually agreed upon months ago.

Yet many do.

Not because they enjoy it.

Because they have no choice.

Why I Started Taking Legal Protection Seriously

Recently, I found myself in a situation where legal support became necessary.

Not because I wanted conflict.

Not because I was looking for confrontation.

But because every other reasonable avenue had already been explored.

The experience taught me something I wish I had learned much earlier.

Legal support is not for large corporations.

It is for every business.

Whether you’re a freelancer, a startup, a production house, an agency, or a multinational company, legal systems exist to create accountability where communication has failed.

Unfortunately, many creative entrepreneurs treat legal structures as something they will “figure out later.”

I was guilty of the same mindset.

What I learned is that legal preparedness is not a luxury.

It is infrastructure.

Contracts Are Not About Distrust

One misconception that exists in the creative industry is that contracts damage relationships.

The opposite is usually true.

Clear contracts create clarity.

Clear payment terms create expectations.

Clear deliverables reduce misunderstandings.

Clear escalation procedures protect both parties.

The strongest professional relationships are rarely built on verbal promises.

They are built on documented commitments and mutual respect.

A contract should never be viewed as a weapon.

It should be viewed as a seatbelt.

You hope you never need it.

But you’re grateful it’s there when things go wrong.

A Message to Fellow Founders

If you’re running a creative business today, don’t wait until a payment dispute forces you to learn these lessons.

Build your legal framework early.

Document everything.

Define payment milestones clearly.

Create late-payment clauses.

Maintain proper records.

Seek legal advice before you need legal intervention.

Most importantly, stop feeling guilty for expecting professional accountability.

Delivering great work and receiving timely payment are not separate conversations.

They are part of the same agreement.

Final Thoughts

The creative industry runs on ideas.

But businesses do not survive on ideas alone.

They survive on trust, accountability, and cash flow.

Every delayed payment has consequences that extend far beyond an invoice.

And every founder eventually learns that protecting their business is just as important as building it.

Sometimes the most creative thing you can do for your company is not making better work.

It’s making sure the work you’ve already delivered gets paid for.

Thanks for reading Rudhra's Substack! You learn precision when one inch of movement ruins a shot. You learn hierarchy, timing, and communication — not from a course, not from a mentor — from just being in the room and paying attention.

As an assistant, you observe more than you speak. You watch how decisions get made. More importantly, you watch how mistakes happen.

Editing teaches you rhythm. Restraint. It forces you to sit with a problem long after you want to walk away from it.

Photography teaches you where to look. And what to ignore — which is harder.

Running a company removes your illusions. Fast. All of them.

The Myth of Specialisation

People love saying it: Jack of all trades, master of none.

Sounds smart. Sounds like advice. It’s incomplete thinking, repeated by people who stopped reading halfway.

“Jack of all trades, master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.”

That second half changes everything.

When you’ve lived multiple roles, you stop seeing work in silos. You understand dependencies. You respect effort across departments. You see problems before they arrive because you’ve caused them before, from the other side.

You don’t walk into a project thinking only about your task.

You understand the system.

What Changes When You’ve Done It All

There’s a different kind of confidence that comes from this.

Not loud. Not performative. Not the confidence of someone who’s never been wrong.

Just clarity.

You don’t panic when something breaks. You’ve broken things before. You don’t look down on any part of the process — because at some point, you were that part. You were the one being looked down on.

That stays with you. It should.

The Illusion of Arrival

At every stage, I thought I was getting closer to something. A title. A role. A moment where things would finally make sense and feel permanent.

There’s no such moment.

There’s just progression. Messy, unglamorous, often uncomfortable. You move from one form of labour to another. The nature of the work changes. The responsibility increases. The stakes get higher.

But it’s still labour.

That’s not a complaint. That’s the point.

Why This Matters.

Not to glorify struggle. Not to perform humility. Not to imply that difficulty is the only path to something real.

But because understanding your work at multiple levels builds something no shortcut, no hack, no accelerated program can give you.

Awareness.

And awareness is the difference between reacting and responding. Between copying and creating. Between managing work and actually leading it.

I didn’t design this journey.

I didn’t strategically plan to understand every part of the process. I just kept showing up. Took the next role. Figured it out.

And somewhere along the way, without a clean moment of realisation, it all connected.

From labour to labour.

Happy International Labour Day.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank"
